This kind of fire

'This kind of fire' was a performance project at the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) that I collaborated on late last year. BAC invited artists and performers to respond to 'The films of David Lynch'.
I worked with Strange Beast, a performance group led by James Lloyd Pegg who trained as an actor and who directed this piece and also performed in it. Also involved were Joe Evans, a musician and sound designer; Mark Knight who contributed video images with contributions from two actors and two other performers: Karolina Wysocka and Max Casillo.
I contributed ideas and edited out material to make the performance more intense. I also contributed programme notes which framed the performance.
One of the themes I respond to in the work of David Lynch and which I wanted to embody in the performance is the sense that we don't always have individual agency but that we are often caught up in patterns of behaviour determined by forces and motives beyond our individual selves. To reflect this theme the performance ran as a loop repeating itself every few minutes - the singer trapped in a script which she found herself performing over and over again.
